AA and Alcoholics Anonymous

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) is an association of people who work together to help one another to address their common problem of alcoholism. The primary objective is to help one another to stay sober. Their primary tools are regular meetings and working through their 12-step program. There are no fees for participation, only voluntary donations to cover their minimal out of pocket expenses.

For my alcoholic, Alcoholics Anonymous was a key part of her recovery. Once she started to go to meetings regularly she realized that to successfully quit drinking she also had to quit her drug use. It has been nearly 20 years now that she has been clean and sober. She gives these meetings much of the credit for her recovery by providing her a place to meet like-minded people without being exposed to use drugs or alcohol.

There are meetings in most towns and cities. In towns of any size there are meetings most days. In more populace places you can find meetings every day at all times of the day or evening. Check your telephone book under Alcoholics Anonymous for local meeting information.
