Control Alcoholic Drinking

How do I control alcoholic drinking?

The simple answer is that you can’t control your alcoholic’s drinking.

Short of locking them in a room and never letting them out, you cannot control another person’s drinking.

More important, if they are legally an adult, it is not your job or responsibility to control anyone else’s behavior. Freedom does not mean license. Freedom has associated responsibilities. If a person is free to drink, then they are also responsible for their drinking behavior.

However, your behavior can influence your alcoholic’s drinking. By focusing on learning the life lessons that make you stronger and more independent of your alcoholic and their behavior, you will affect your alcoholic’s drinking experience, and possibly contribute to their deciding to quit drinking.

The things you can do that can influence your alcoholic’s drinking include:

  • Address your enabling behavior.
  • Learn about acceptance and detachment.
  • Deal with your own emotional, spiritual and financial issues.
  • Learn all you can about how those in an alcoholic’s life contribute to the problem.
